Description from the seller
Monumental Scottish Celtic Revival Brooch – J.C&S (James Crichton & Son) – Edinburgh – c. 1880–1905 – Silver & Cairngorm-style Citrine – Ø 49 mm
An impressive and authentic Scottish brooch from the late 19th century, produced during the flourishing period of the Scottish Celtic Revival.
This monumental disc brooch (diameter 49 mm) has been tested for silver and richly hand-engraved with thistle motifs — the national symbol of Scotland — surrounded by elegant foliate ornament.
Centrally placed is a large, warm amber-colored faceted stone in a high domed cabochon, set in a characteristic star-shaped prong setting. The form, proportions and setting closely match traditional Scottish Cairngorm jewelry from the 19th century.
The term “Cairngorm” refers to the famous Citrine quartz from the Scottish Cairngorm Mountains, which was widely used in national jewelry during this period. The stone has not been gemmologically tested for exact origin, but stylistically it completely fits within this tradition.
On the back is the master mark J.C&S, attributed to James Crichton & Son, jewelers in Edinburgh, active from 1879.
Specifications:
• Origin: Scotland (Edinburgh)
• Period: c. 1880–1905
• Material: tested solid silver
• Stone: large faceted Citrine in Cairngorm style (not gemmologically tested)
• Diameter: 49 mm
• Weight: 21.9 g

A powerful and collectible example of late-Victorian national jewelry art, where romantic Scottish heritage and artisanal silverwork come together.
