Italian ceramic sculpture of a seated leopard with an alert, open-mouthed expression, measuring 60 cm high, 30 cm wide and 26 cm deep, glazed with a glossy finish, dating to the 1960s–70s in the Hollywood Regency / Mid‑Century Modern style and signed.
Description from the seller
This statue is a classic example of artistic ceramic decorative ware, of Italian manufacture in the style of Bassano or the famous, dating back to the mid-20th century (the 60s/70s).
Here is a detailed description divided into key points:
1. Subject and Pose
The sculpture depicts a leopard seated on its hind legs. The animal is portrayed in an aggressive or warning posture: the mouth is wide open in a roar, showing the teeth, pronounced fangs and the tongue. The gaze is directed slightly upward, giving a proud and dynamic presence.
2. Colors and Decoration
The piece stands out for an unusual and stylized coloring:
Base color: The body is not in the classic yellow-gold, but features a shade that ranges from cream white to pink/purple (especially visible on the face, chest, and along the back).
Spots: The spots are a deep black, distributed irregularly but harmoniously. On the face there are small dots, while on the body they become larger and oval, imitating the natural pattern of the feline.
Eyes: A detail of great impact is the color of the eyes, in a vivid acid-green/yellowish hue, which contrasts with the pinkish tones of the snout.
3. Material and Finish
Material: Glazed ceramic
Finish: The surface is characterized by a highly reflective glossy glaze, which emphasizes the sculpture’s curves and gives it a luxurious and "pop" appearance.
4. Style and Placement
This type of giant sculptures (often called "Hollywood Regency" or "Mid-Century Modern") were iconic pieces for entrances of villas or elegant living rooms between the 60s and 80s. Today they are highly sought-after collectible objects for maximalist or vintage decor.
