Description from the seller

Oil on panel by A. Kauffmann, Adolf Kaufmann (1848–1916), refined interpreter of Central European landscape painting between the 19th and 20th centuries.

50 x 48 within the frame (defects and courtesy)

The work depicts a pastoral scene of great compositional balance: a shepherd leads the flock along a damp path, immersed in a spring landscape dominated by blossoming trees and a diffuse, soft, almost pearly light.

The painting is rich yet measured, built with glazes and tactile touches that sensitively render the seasonal atmosphere and the breath of nature. The scene, simple only in appearance, reveals a remarkable narrative capacity and a deep knowledge of luminous effects, elements that place the painting among Kaufmann’s most successful productions.

The work fully sits within the post-Barbizon naturalist tradition, reinterpreted with Central European taste, and expresses a lyrical, timeless vision of rural life, making it particularly appreciable both aesthetically and...
