Byzantine Carnelian Intaglio – Crucifixion with IC XC – 11th–12th Century (Attributed)

Period: 11th–early 12th century AD (stylistic attribution)
Culture: Byzantine
Material: Carnelian
Technique: Intaglio engraving
Dimensions: 19 × 15 × 2 mm
Shape: Oval
Condition: Good overall condition, with age-consistent wear

Description
Fine carnelian intaglio engraved with the Crucifixion of Christ, flanked by two mourning figures, traditionally identified as the Virgin Mary and Saint John. Above the cross appear the Greek Christogram abbreviations IC XC (Iesous Christos).

The composition is executed in negative engraving, typical of Byzantine devotional gems intended for personal use, possibly mounted in a ring or pendant. The reverse is plain and unengraved.

Stylistic Assessment
The iconography, linear treatment, and epigraphic formula are consistent with Middle Byzantine production (11th–12th century).

Provenance: Private European collection.
