Icon - St. George and St. Severian - Wood, Brass

This Orthodox icon stands as a jewel of Eastern devotion, majestically encased in a golden brass riza or oklad, which protects and enhances the sacredness of the figures depicted. On its left flank emerges the figure of Saint George, captured in his most canonical form as a beardless youth with curly hair; here, stripped of his mount and the fervor of battle against the dragon, he is shown in the serenity of standing saints, wearing a tunic and cloak as a noble witness to the faith. Beside him, the presence of Saint Severian completes this votive pair, a common union in family iconography where saints act as specific protectors of donors who share their names. The two saints share the year of their martyrdoms, 303 AD. The base of the piece safeguards its greatest philological treasure: an inscription carved in Old Church Slavonic, employing the enigmatic characters of the square Glagolitic script. This alphabet, the most primitive Slavic writing system born from the ingenuity of Saints Cyril and Methodius, survives here as a deliberate and refined anachronism, characteristic of Dalmatian-influenced areas and the most archaic liturgical traditions. The calligraphy, with its angular and solemn geometry, transcribes the names of Georgiy and Sever, integrating the sacred language into the decorative program of the metalwork to elevate this object of worship to the status of a manuscript on metal. Measurements: 22 x 28.5 cm Condition: Good condition. Shipping: The piece will be professionally packed and shipped. Please note that the shipping costs indicated are estimates; the final amount may vary depending on market rates and specific packaging requirements for shipping both pieces separately.
