Description from the seller
Ch. Herve. France, active in the 19th century.
Resting herd in the stall interior.
Oil on wood.
Lower left signed “CH. HERVE”. 35 x 26.4 cm (13.8 x 10.4 inches).
This is the work of a specialized 19th-century genre painter whose identity in the art-historical context is not definitively established. The work stands as representative of the animal painting that was widespread in the late 19th century, focusing on the realistic rendering of rural motifs.
• Visual execution: The composition employs a deliberate light from the upper right to differentiate surfaces—in particular the wool of the sheep and the straw.
• Thematic context: The stable interior was a classic subject of the era, emphasizing a calm, almost static depiction of domestic animals in their familiar surroundings.
• Painterly execution: The artist works with an earthy color palette and a impasto application in the light areas, giving the scene solid spatial depth.
• Iconography: The depiction of the animals at the trough and the manger forms a typical snapshot of rural daily life, without pursuing a complex symbolism.
• Condition: The work is in good conservation status; the wooden support is stable and the paint layer shows age-appropriate, fine craquelure.
