The mineral topaz, also known by the misleading trade names Finder’s Diamond, Killiecrankie Diamond, Mogok Diamond, Saxon Diamond and Slave Diamond[6], is a commonly occurring inosilicate with the chemical composition Al2[6][(F,OH)2|SiO4].[3]. The fluorine (F) and hydroxide (OH) ions indicated in parentheses can substitute for each other in the formula (substitution, diadochy), but are always in the same proportion relative to the other constituents of the mineral. An F-free OH analogue is known as a synthetic compound.[7]
Topaz crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system and usually forms well-developed and sometimes very flat-faced crystals with short- to long-prismatic or columnar habit and a glassy luster on the surfaces. In pure form it is colorless and transparent. Through multiple light refractions due to lattice defects or polycrystalline structure it can appear white and, with impurities, take on a yellow, pinkish to brownish-red, violet, pale blue and pale green color, with the transparency accordingly decreasing.
With a Mohs hardness of 8, topaz is among the hard minerals and serves as a reference on the Mohs scale, which extends up to 10 (diamond). Like diamond, it is brittle and, along the basal plane (001), very easily cleaved with perfectly smooth fracture surfaces, something that is often already suggested by cleavage lines in the stone. Irregularly broken topazes exhibit uneven to weakly shell-like fracture surfaces.
