Description from the seller

Russian Icon – John the Baptist with the Lamb of God

Russia, probably second half of the 18th century. Tempera on wood with gold ground. Depiction of John the Baptist as Forerunner of Christ. The Saint points to the “Lamb of God” in a bowl, a symbolic rendering of the words from the Gospel of John: “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.”

The icon shows typical features of Russian provincial painting with a wide border zone, finely modeled face, and Church Slavonic inscription on the scroll. Back with two swallow-tail rails.

Rare iconographic variant of John the Baptist with Eucharistic reference.
