Court Cupboard in solid oak, Jacobäean/Commonwealth style (17th century) with 18th‑century Georgian revisions, dated 1658 and 1774, measuring about 142 cm wide, 130 cm high and 50 cm deep.

"Court Cupboard" of Gallo-English Tradition
General Description
Type of furniture: Low two-body sideboard, called the "Court Cupboard".
Style: Jacobean / Commonwealth (17th century) with Georgian-era revisions (18th century).
Material: Solid oak ("Dark Oak") with original patina.
Dimensions: Width ~142 cm, Height ~130 cm, Depth ~50 cm.
Authenticity Elements and Inscriptions
Primary Dating (1658): Central carved panel bearing the date "1658" and the marriage initials "G R A" (arranged in a triangle according to tradition).
Secondary Dating (1774): Intermediate crosspiece bearing the inscription "K + N Her Cupboard 1774", indicating a later transmission or dowry.
Construction:
Presence of turned baluster posts.
Back panels sawn lengthwise, showing irregular manual sawing marks typical of the 17th century.
Mortise-and-tenon joints with signs of natural wood shrinkage confirming age.
Hardware: Brass hinges of the "H-hinges" (butterfly) type, probably installed during the 1774 revision to reinforce the structure.
Condition
Structure: Very good overall, sound wood with natural oxidation consistent on the internal faces and rear.
Patina: Deep, rich tone, typical of old oak that has not undergone modern stripping.
The lower-right cabinet knob is missing and the lower-right closure bar is also slightly damaged.
The piece closes shut quite properly.
