Historiquement, chaque homme Kuba adulte portait un ikul. Comme dans de nombreuses autres cultures, cette épée symbolisait la virilité. Les Kuba sont réputés pour leur savoir-faire en forge et l'importance qu'ils accordent au forgeron de la communauté. La forge était considérée, au même titre que le tissage et quelques autres arts, comme un art royal. Cela explique pourquoi le port d'armes était perçu par les Kuba non seulement comme un symbole culturel de classe, de virilité et de guerrier, mais aussi de royauté.

L'ikul  fut conçu et créé par le roi Shyaam aMbul aNgoong au début du XVIIe siècle  et était initialement porté exclusivement par les Kuba du clan Bushoong, alors au pouvoir, comme symbole de paix. Qu'une arme serve de symbole de paix peut paraître paradoxal, mais cela reflète fidèlement le fait que la paix ne peut souvent être garantie que par un gouvernement disposant d'une force militaire efficace.
