The story begins in an unexpected place: the Carré Sainte‑Anne in Montpellier, a former Gothic church transformed into an exhibition space. In 2015, JonOne enters with his colors, his energy and his past as a New York graffiti artist. The shock is immediate. Below, the cold stone, the history, the silence. Above, his canvases suspended, vibrant, almost loud with gesture and color. It is from there that the title is born: Above and Below — above and below, physically and symbolically.
JonOne does not recoat the walls as he does on the street. He chooses the canvas, clearly affirming his desire to be recognized as a painter, not only as a street artist. The large formats dialogue with the sacred architecture, while a few sculptures — notably in plexiglass — float in the space, catching the light of the stained glass and giving the impression that color has broken free from gravity.
In this church, one feels his journey: below, the Harlem child, the tagged trains, the street as a survival ground. Above, the artist exhibited in an institutional place, embracing filiations with abstract expressionism — JonOne willingly cites Willem de Kooning or Joan Mitchell — while preserving the urgency and freedom of the gesture born from graffiti.
The exhibition is neither a revanche nor a rupture. Rather a passage. As if JonOne says, without heavy rhetoric, that one can come from below without renouncing where one comes from, and rise without losing momentum. In the silence of Sainte‑Anne, his colors tell this ascent — not vertical, but interior.
