Masque Yohouré, a Yaouré mask from Côte d’Ivoire, dating to the mid-20th century, from a private collection, carved in light wood and measuring 40 cm high by 1 cm deep and 1 cm wide, weighing 1 g, in excellent condition with official/original authenticity.
Description from the seller
The Yohouré mask, originating from the Baoulé people of Côte d’Ivoire, embodies an emblematic figure in initiatory societies and agricultural rituals. Carved from lightweight wood, this mask stands out for its stylized features: an oval face, almond-shaped eyes, a discreet mouth, and a hairstyle often adorned with geometric motifs or feathers. Its surface, covered with natural pigments, reinforces its sacred and mysterious aspect.
Used during Yohouré ceremonies, this mask symbolizes the spirits of nature and ancestors, playing a key role in protecting crops, purifying villages, or initiating the young. Worn by masked dancers, it embodies a benevolent presence, a mediator between the living and the invisible world.
