Description from the seller
Saint George (Saint George and the Dragon), one of the warrior saints most venerated in the Eastern Christian tradition and also very well known in the West.
What appears in the icon
1. Saint George on horseback
He is shown mounted on a white horse, a symbol of purity and spiritual victory.
He wears a red cloak, which in Christian iconography represents martyrdom.
With a spear he pierces the dragon.
2. The dragon
Symbolizes evil, paganism, or the demon.
In the tradition, Saint George defeats it to save a city and a princess.
3. The princess or queen
On the right you can see a crowned female figure, representing the saved princess or the city freed from evil.
4. The portrait of Christ above
In the upper corner Jesus Christ is blessing.
Indicates that Saint George’s victory is realized by the grace of Christ, not only by human strength.
Symbolic meaning of the icon
This icon represents not only a story, but a spiritual message:
Saint George → the Christian who fights for the faith.
The dragon → evil and sin.
The spear → faith.
The white horse → purity and the victory of God.
Possible origin of the style
Due to the simple drawing, the limited colors (red, black, white) and the type of line, it seems to be an icon of Russian or Balkan tradition, possibly:
18th–19th century
egg tempera on panel technique
with levkas (gypsum and glue) as the base
