Description from the seller
Biography:
Ranft began studying painting and drawing in Geneva under the guidance of Eugene Etienne Sordet (1836-1915), who taught him the art of landscape painting. He later moved to Paris where he attended the studios of Gustave Courbet and Auguste Dumont, the sculptor who taught him the art of engraving. Ranft subsequently produced many lithographs, both posters and prints, while continuing to paint landscapes.
He came into contact with the magazine La Plume, for which he produced miniatures and engravings, and he also participated in the Salon des Cent; he also collaborated with the magazine L'Estampe moderne.
He left Paris and moved to Coubert. He was a member of the Society of Fine Arts and exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants; in 1910 he exhibited in Paris in the Channel and Simondon gallery.
Between 1892 and 1913 he was the author of numerous illustrations for books and novels including Mademoiselle d'Orchair (1892) and L'Illustre Famille (1913). In England he is regarded as the best interpreter of William Turner.
Ranft died in June 1931 and a few weeks later Gustave Kahn paid him homage in the magazine Mercure de France when a retrospective of the painter was organized at the Salon d'Automne.
