Description from the seller
The Janus Heads of the Lega: Duality and Initiation in African Art
The Janus heads of the Lega, a people from the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, are emblematic ritual objects, characterized by their two opposing faces. Carved in ivory or wood, these figures symbolize the fundamental duality of existence: life and death, past and present, visible and invisible. They also embody the balance between complementary forces, a central concept in Lega philosophy.
Used mainly during initiation ceremonies (Bwami), these heads are not idols but pedagogical supports. They teach initiates the values of wisdom, justice, and respect for the ancestors. Their bifacial form recalls that any knowledge involves an understanding of opposites.
These works, often handed down from generation to generation, bear witness to a complex cosmology where art and spirituality intertwine to guide the individual toward social maturity.
