Description from the seller
Mask (Bwami, Lukungu) (wood 30 cm)
Lega people
In the forests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, art emerges mainly for semi-secret associations of men and women, such as the Bwami association of the Lega people. The Bwami teaching permeates all aspects of life, guides the moral development of the individual, and regulates relationships with others. The Bwami teaching is expressed through masks, heads, and small figures of wood and ivory, all of which play an important role in initiation into the highest classes of society. Although the forms are simple, these carved objects represent complex and diverse meanings, clarified by proverbs, sketches, and dances. The masks refer to ancestors and are passed down as symbols of the continuity from one generation of initiates to the next. For the Lega, physical beauty and moral excellence are inseparably linked.
