Description from the seller

A stylised bronze bust of an African woman, mounted on a marble plinth, executed in the manner of the Viennese Werkstätte Hagenauer. The piece reflects the workshop’s characteristic restraint and economy of line: elongated proportions, simplified modelling, and a composed, almost architectural treatment of the features.

The head is rendered with clean contours and a calm, self-contained expression. The stylisation - particularly in the treatment of the hair and facial planes - aligns with the aesthetic vocabulary associated with Hagenauer’s mid-century production, where African subjects were interpreted through a distinctly modernist lens. The result is sculptural rather than sentimental, with emphasis placed on silhouette and balance.

The bronze carries a consistent patina with light, even wear. The marble base provides a measured contrast in tone and texture, anchoring the verticality of the form. Condition is commensurate with age, with minor surface marks but no evident structural issues.
