Description from the seller
Antique Victorian Rococo Revival Brass & Copper Inkwell Stand – Ornate Writing Desk Inkstand
A richly decorative antique inkstand crafted in cast brass with warm copper elements, embodying the opulent character of the Victorian Rococo Revival. Lavish scrollwork, shell motifs, and fluid asymmetrical curves create a sculptural silhouette typical of late 19th-century decorative metalwork.
The pierced and relief-cast brass base is densely ornamented with foliate detailing and sweeping forms, framed by twin side handles that provide both balance and practicality. A hand-finished copper backplate and matching copper lid introduce a refined tonal contrast, adding warmth and depth to the composition.
At the centre sits a removable lidded inkwell with a copper top and brass collar, seamlessly integrated into a fluted mount. The construction reflects traditional period metalworking techniques, combining cast components with hand-finished surfaces and assembled elements. The underside shows period assembly with screwed copper paneling, consistent with late Victorian manufacture.
Originally intended for a gentleman’s writing desk or study, the piece evokes the atmosphere of a 19th-century library interior — leather-bound books, polished wood, and the ritual of handwritten correspondence. Today it serves equally well as a functional desk accessory or a striking decorative object for period interiors and curated eclectic spaces.
Good antique condition with attractive age-related patina. Surface wear, tonal variation, and minor marks consistent with use. Structurally sound. Inkwell insert removable.
