Description from the seller
Cast Iron Kingfisher Doorstop – Hand-Painted
An elegant and characterful cast iron doorstop sculpted as a kingfisher poised on a naturalistic woodland base. The figure is beautifully modelled, with finely textured plumage and carefully observed proportions that capture the alert stillness of the bird in repose.
The surface retains its original hand-applied polychrome finish in deep country greens and muted teal tones, enhanced by warm gilt detailing that frames the base with understated classical ornament. The layered paintwork and subtle patina lend the piece a gentle time-softened presence, perfectly suited to traditional interiors.
Both sculptural and functional, the weight and solidity of the cast iron construction make it a practical doorstop, while the natural history subject places it firmly within the decorative vocabulary of the English country house – ideal for a library, study, hallway, or conservatory setting.
Very good overall condition. Honest surface wear and small paint losses consistent with age and use. No structural damage, cracks, or restorations. Stable, solid, and fully functional. A refined decorative object that blends utility, craftsmanship, and timeless country house character.
