Opera glass from the Emil Busch company, Rathenow! Circa 1890
Biedermeier Historicism.
Emil Busch (born August 6, 1820 in Berlin; died April 1, 1888 in Rathenow) was a German industrialist in precision mechanics and optics. He contributed to the invention of the wide-angle lens.
In 1868 Busch was named Royal Commercial Counselor by the king for his merits. In 1872 he transformed the company into a joint-stock corporation to facilitate the needed investments. It did so with the help of the Quistorp & Co. association bank. The share capital of the corporation amounted to 275,000 talers. In the resulting Rathenower Optische Industrie-Anstalt vormals Emil Busch A.-G., Emil Busch thereafter held high positions as “Delegate of the Supervisory Board” and as a Director.
The company subsequently achieved a dominant market position. Due to informal agreements with Zeiss, it limited free competition. Carl Zeiss let his son Roderich undertake commercial training at Busch. Busch, in turn, contributed with a report that led the state to grant Zeiss’s glass-technical laboratory a subsidy of 35,000 talers. Busch, who never studied formally, died in 1888. Because of him—and also due to Johann and Eduard Duncker—the town of Rathenow became synonymous with high-quality optical devices.
The theater glass captivates with its very good preserved condition.
Smooth adjustment and alignment – clear lenses – dust-free, cleaned!
Minimal patina.
Brass, probably gilt—and mother-of-pearl coating.
The glasses, with the exception of one, can be easily unscrewed for cleaning.
Distributed by Optician L. Bühler-Maximilianplatz-Munich, Historical Opticians in Munich around 1900: Around 1900 the optical market in Munich was strongly shaped by scientific developments.
