Two large antique metal hat boxes from Europe, dating to circa 1900–1930 in Edwardian stylistic, with oval bodies and hinged lids, large 31 × 46 × 38 cm and small 23 × 30 × 28 cm, showing signs of wear and patina.
Description from the seller
Two very large historical hat boxes made of sturdy tin (playing card as a size reference).
Such boxes were originally used to store and transport hats. Due to their construction and manufacturing, the pieces are presumably from the early 20th century, roughly between 1900 and 1930.
Both hat boxes are oval in shape and have a fold-down lid with a closure (no key).
The exterior sides display a decorative original fabric band, which on the back sides is only attached with tape and can be removed relatively easily.
The inner surfaces are coated in dark red, or dark green. It cannot be determined with certainty whether this is an enamel coating or an early varnish finish.
The hat boxes are made of relatively thick and sturdy metal and appear significantly more robust than many later-produced models.
Such pieces were previously often used for travel or for storing delicate headwear and are today decorative collector and vintage objects.
Condition
Used, age-related condition.
Typical signs of use include:
• scratches and wear
• losses of lacquer
• dents and minor deformations in the metal
• patina and partial oxidation traces
• also clear signs of use on the inside
The boxes are in unrestored original condition.
The small box can be packed inside the large one.
Size of the large box:
Height 31 cm, Width 46 cm, Depth 38 cm
Size of the small box:
Height 23 cm, Width 30 cm, Depth 28 cm
