【Product details】
This is a contemporary Mashiko ware sculptural container by Sakata Jinnai, created in 2014, showcasing the artist’s distinctive Black Pottery aesthetic.
Formed in black-fired clay, the exterior is richly covered with Sakata’s signature shinjin-mon relief pattern, inspired by ancient Jōmon cord impressions. Created using high-temperature carbonised firing, this pottery achieves a rare and sophisticated jet-black finish that is unusual within Mashiko ware. The irregular, organic contours give the piece a strong sculptural presence while emphasising its handmade character. In contrast, the interior is finished with applied silver foil using a foil-press technique, creating a luminous reflective surface.
Mashiko ware originated in the late Edo period in Mashiko Town, Tochigi Prefecture, and is celebrated for its earthy textures, durability, and strong handmade character.
Sakata Jinnai (b. 1943) is a distinguished Japanese artist celebrated for his innovative Black Pottery. A student of the legendary Hamada Shoji, Sakata established his kiln in Mashiko in 1966. His career spans decades of international exhibitions, from Takashimaya to New York and Shanghai, and his practice has evolved to include glass, washi, and bonsai. Exploring cosmic and natural themes, his status as a master is evidenced by his dedications of work to Japan’s most sacred sites, including the Ise Grand and Izumo Taisha shrines.
Some kiln-born cracks are visible, formed during firing and not later damage. Minor scratches on the silver foil. Overall in good to very good used condition. Please refer to the photos for details.
