Description from the seller
Splendid embossed silver monstrance, chased and cast, a masterpiece of Neapolitan goldsmithing from the 18th century.
This specimen represents the highest artistic expression of Neapolitan Baroque under the reign of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon. The sculptural quality of the figural shaft and the richness of the rays make it a piece of exceptional collecting and historical value.
Technical Details and Stamping:
The object is intact and bears the official stamps of the city of Naples, perfectly legible:
City: Abbreviation "NAP" with Bourbon crown (certifies the silver’s title).
Console: Initials "MA" (attributable to the Console of the Guild of Goldsmiths, plausibly Michele Avellino).
Year: Figures "77", dating the work precisely to 1777.
Artistic and Structural Analysis:
The Shaft: Splendid sculptural group with two angels supporting the case, resting on a globe in gilded silver. The globe is finely engraved by burin with the face of the "Radiant Sun" and stars.
The Raywork: Rich decoration with alternating rays, clouds, cherub heads, and clusters of Eucharistic grapes. Surmounted by a peak cross.
The Base: Inside the base is preserved the original wooden core from the period (212 g), fundamental for the stability of the imposing structure and a guarantee of historical authenticity.
Weight and Size Specifications:
Height: 66 cm
Gross Weight: 1904 g
Wood Core Weight: 212 g
Net Silver Weight (estimate): about 1692 g (solid high-thickness silver)
Condition: Excellent. Original patina, sharp chased details. A work ready to be displayed in a private collection or museum.
