Peridot, also called chrysoprase (chrysolite), is a particularly pure variety of the mineral olivine. The bright-green, transparent mineral is used as a gemstone.
Peridot is the magnesium-rich variety of olivine (forsterite) with a composition close to Mg2SiO4. Its crystals are orthorhombic, and its hardness is slightly lower than that of quartz.
Peridot is yellow-green to olive-green in color. Brownish varieties are also known. Peridot is sometimes confused with emerald and other green gemstones, including chrysoberyl, diopside, moldavite, and garnet (demantoid), quartz (prasiolite, prasem) and tourmaline varieties (chromolith, verdelith).
Already in the Old Testament Peridot is mentioned (as pitdah), and in ancient Rome the stone was valued as the “evening emerald” because it easily glows under lamp light. In the Middle Ages Peridot was often part of church jewelry; presumably Peridot stones were brought to Europe by Crusaders. The stone was attributed healing powers, as well as the power to ward off evil spirits.
