Antique pottery - Djenne-Djeno - Mali
Five antique pieces of pottery from the Djenne-region of central Mali. These items can be found when the Niger-river floods wash away layers of sand covering ancient sites or burial places. These specific items were placed as gifts for the deceased in the graves. The pot decorated with the 5 totemic snakes is a so-called gravemarker, donating good fortune to the deceased. Height; 10 cm.
The two small imitation bedposts are also ment as gifts for the deceased; passing on the "rest" of a bed. H. ; 12 and 8 cm. The tiny small pottery item represents a small stool, also ment to give the deceased rest. H. 5 cm.
Finally the large pottery jar probably had food for the afterlife. Height.; 20 cm. Some damage on the rim of the pot.
Two "ears" as decorations.
The Djeno-period dates from around the 17th-18th Cent. Collected in Djenné in the late 1990`s and from a private Dutch collection.
