Description from the seller
Title: Eça de Queirós – A Cidade e as Serras – 1st Edition – Porto, 1901
Description:
First edition of this masterpiece of Portuguese literature. First edition of the last great novel by Eça de Queirós, published posthumously in 1901, one year after the author's death in Paris.
Edited by Livraria Chardron (Lello & Irmão) in Porto, this is one of the earliest posthumous editions of Eça and among the most valuable for collectors. The novel, which develops the central idea of the tale "Civilização" (1892), marks the transition of the author to a more philosophical and intimate phase, distancing from the critical realism of his earlier major novels.
Important historical note: In the introduction of the first edition, the following notice can be read: "From page 241 to the end, the proofs of this book were not revised by the author, torn away by death before having given this part of his work that final touch in which he habitually placed the most persevering and admirably lucid diligence."
Copy features:
Editor: Livraria Chardron, of Lello & Irmão, editors
Place and year: Porto, 1901
Format: In-8º
Pagination: 380 pages + [1] f.
Binding: [Half-leather/leather with decorative spine, gilded title, covers preserved]
Illustrations: Photographic portrait of the author on the title page
State of conservation: [As in photos – wear at the extremities, pages with damp-stain/foxing, bookstore stamp (Livraria Leia, São Paulo) visible, etc.]
Provenance: Copy with the Livraria Leia stamp (R. Quintino Bocaiúva, 291, São Paulo), indicating circulation in Brazil, a country where Eça de Queirós enjoyed enormous popularity.
