Behind the gessoed board there is a backing board to protect it from possible moisture.

Origin: Born in Ohio, where he won various art contests and scholarships in his youth.
Early Career: At 17 he began a full-time career as a commercial artist in Pennsylvania, taking commissions in cities such as New York, Chicago, and parts of Canada.
California Settlement: In 1935 he moved to San Francisco to work as an art director. Fascinated by the area's geography, he began painting in oil on canvas.
Exhibition Activity: He actively exhibited throughout his life in galleries in San Francisco, Los Altos, San Diego, and Santa Cruz.
