Description from the seller
Warwick-vase
Neo-classical bronze vase
Decorative vase inspired by the famous Warwick Vase, executed in bronze and richly decorated in a neoclassical style. The body of the vase is adorned with finely modelled masks in high relief, alternating with classical motifs. The powerful, serpentine handles recall grapevines and refer to Bacchic iconography traditionally associated with ancient kraters used for wine.
The original Warwick Vase is a monumental Roman marble krater from the 2nd century AD, discovered in the 18th century near Tivoli and later famous in the Warwick Castle collection in England. The impressive form quickly became an icon of neoclassical aesthetics and inspired numerous interpretations in bronze, marble and other decorative arts during the late 18th and 19th centuries.
This example stands out for the strong modelling of the masks, the elegant proportions between the bowl, the handles and the base, and the refined classical ornamentation. The pedestal bears an engraved inscription “Cadeau de Napoléonide – 1810”, a reference to the Napoleonic period that gives the object an extra historical dimension.
The composition combines a sculptural appearance with a refined decorative quality, making it an impressive neoclassical object, suitable both as interior decoration and for a classical art collection.
