Description from the seller
Decorative ornament representing a reliquary, made in stuccoed and polychromed wood, possibly dating to the 18th century. The piece shows a stylized interpretation of the Eucharistic monstrance, with the central viril in the form of a golden disk that houses a cross inscribed, surrounded by rays that symbolize the divine radiance of the Blessed Sacrament. The base, conical or pedestal-shaped, reinforces its liturgical character, although in this case it is a pictorial or sculptural representation more symbolic than functional.
The stucco over wood — a technique that involves applying a layer of plaster or paste and then painting it — yields a smooth surface suitable for polychromy, which in this piece is preserved with wear, showing craquelure, flaking and patina that attest to its age. The background in muted green tones and the gold applied with tempera or gold leaf suggest artisanal manufacture, probably intended for domestic devotional use or as a decorative element in smaller chapels.
Although not a liturgical monstrance in the strict sense, this figure captures the essential iconography of Eucharistic worship, and can be linked to the Baroque tradition of visual exaltation of the sacrament. Its value lies both in its symbolic charge and in the technique and condition, which reinforce its authenticity as an antique object.
Certified shipment and careful packaging.
