Description from the seller
Antique Silver Salad Serving Set (c. 1860–1880) – Silver Handles with Gold-Plated Details. Minerve Hallmark.
Presented here is a refined 19th-century silver salad serving set, dating approximately from 1880–1900, beautifully preserved in its original fitted presentation case. Such serving sets were essential elements of elegant Victorian dining tables and often given as wedding or household gifts.
The set consists of a large serving spoon and matching salad fork, both featuring richly decorated handles and carefully engraved serving surfaces. Their sculptural elegance and balanced proportions reflect the refined craftsmanship of European silverwork during the late Victorian period.
Craftsmanship
The handles are beautifully shaped with raised ornamental motifs, typical of late 19th-century decorative silver styles. The engraved bowls display delicate hand-cut floral scrollwork, giving the pieces a refined yet lively appearance.
Gold-plated highlights (often called vermeil details) were frequently applied to serving pieces to enhance contrast and protect surfaces used with food.
The fork features the classic pierced tines design used in Victorian salad servers, allowing dressing to drain slightly when serving.
Historical Context
During the Victorian era, elaborate serving utensils became increasingly popular as dining etiquette and multi-course meals developed. Specialized tools such as salad servers, fish knives, and pastry servers appeared in refined households.
Such sets were usually stored in custom presentation boxes, much like the one accompanying this example.
A charming and historically rich antique silver serving set, perfect for collectors of decorative silver or for elevating special dining occasions
-The set will be sent very well packaged and fully insured with priority 1 status, as I would want for myself
Thank you and happy treasure hunting!
