Metoko mask from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, provenance Private Collection, height 31 cm, width 1 cm, depth 1 cm, condition Excellent, sold with stand.
Description from the seller
The Metoko masks are among the most desired and sought-after in the DRC's sculptural corpus, both for their visual power and for their formal radicality. This one is a perfect illustration of that. The forehead deliberately bulged, treated as a solid and dominant mass, immediately imposes the mask's presence and draws the eye. The tubular, deeply hollowed eyes project an expression that is at once distant and piercing, accentuating the supernatural character of the whole.
The mouth, deliberately abstract and reduced to a synthetic form, participates in this controlled aesthetic where every element is designed for visual and symbolic impact rather than for naturalism. The fine chiseling of the face and the coiffure attests to a high level of technical mastery, with work that is regular, precise and rhythmic, revealing the experience of a sculptor fully anchored in his stylistic vocabulary.
These masks were used in a ritual and community context, intervening during ceremonies where they played an active role in social regulation, the transmission of values and mediation between the visible world and the invisible forces. The deep and homogeneous patina attests to real, prolonged use, reinforcing the authenticity and symbolic charge of the object.
