Description from the seller
The Red Mask of the Dan: Protection and Purification in the Face of Fires
Among the Dan, established in Côte d’Ivoire and Liberia, the so-called "firefighter" mask — recognizable by its bright red color — embodies a ritual response to natural catastrophes, especially fires. Unlike traditional dance masks, this one is not tied to an ancestral cult, but to an apotropaic function: to ward off destructive forces and purify the space profaned by fire.
Carved from light wood and painted ochre or camwood, its red symbolizes both danger and regeneration. Worn during emergency ceremonies, it is associated with dances and chants aimed at restoring harmony between humans, the forest spirits, and the elements. Its use reflects a pragmatic cosmology, where art becomes a tool of resilience in the face of chaos.
