Description from the seller
Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid.
Late Roman - early Byzantine silver alloy / billon crown ring. The bezel is formed as a raised cluster composed of numerous hemispherical bosses (filigree) arranged around a central knob, forming a three-dimensional rosette-like composition that resembles a small crown or diadem.
Outside diameter: ± 25,3 mm
Inside diameter: ± 22,8 - 20,1 mm
Bezel: ± 17,8 mm
Condition: good solid condition. The crown-like cluster of bosses remains well preserved and clearly visible. Attractive dark patina and signs of wear consistent with age and use.
Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request for all lots with a hammer price of €100 or higher.
-> Rings of this type are commonly referred to as “crown rings” because of the crown-like arrangement of rounded bosses forming the bezel. Such designs were popular in Roman and Late Antique jewellery, where the clustered globular ornament often represents a stylised rosette or floral motif, a decorative element widely used in Roman art and metalwork.
Catawiki disclaimer:
This object has been carefully examined for its material and surface characteristics.
Laboratory analysis (e.g. XRF) is not routinely undertaken in private collecting, and destructive testing is avoided as it causes permanent damage to archaeological material.
Before modern hallmarking, gold and silver alloys varied depending on local resources, recycling practices and economic conditions.
