Portable Triptych Icon of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church (Tewahedo) from the 19th century, intended for private or travel devotion.
Dated between 1840 and 1870 during the late Gondarine tradition. The piece presents an Ethiopian iconographic program:
- The Virgin Mary with the enthroned Child, flanked by archangels
- Saint George on horseback vanquishing the dragon
- Baptism of Christ, with Saint John the Baptist
- Crucifixion, with Mary and Saint John
Top finial with a carved Ethiopian cross, characteristic of the Gondarine tradition
This iconographic ensemble reflects the central mysteries of Ethiopian Christianity (Incarnation, Baptism, Sacrifice, and Protection)
Painted in traditional egg tempera using mineral pigments and earths on carved and assembled wood. With inscriptions in Ge’ez
