Emerald is a dark to bright green variety of the silicate mineral beryl with the chemical composition Al2Be3[Si6O18]. The color of emerald, whose range extends from dark bluish-green to pale yellow-green, is caused by small impurities of chromium (Cr3+) and vanadium ions (V3+).
Like the pure mineral beryl, emerald crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system and typically forms hexagonal, prismatic to columnar crystals with a glassy luster on the surfaces. Its Mohs hardness of 7.5 to 8 is comparable to that of beryl.
