Description from the seller

Great outstanding disk-hilt dagger, Misericordia

1450 - Germany, Passau
Large disk-hilt dagger with a typical Misericordia blade
With original hilt in good preserved condition
Forge mark in the stylistic form of the Passau Wolf

In literature, this dagger type is known in Latin as Misericordia. Translated into German as Gnadgott. With such a Misericordia, gravely wounded and near-death knights were, with a targeted thrust, relieved from their worldly suffering on the battlefield and granted God's grace—the redemption, the death. Hence this very special and rare dagger received the name Gnadgott or Misericordia.

The ricasso at the base of the blade is adorned on both sides; on the obverse are the structural lines of a winding snake moving from left to right and abutting the deeply struck forge mark. On the reverse of the ricasso, the outlines of minuscule letters can be seen, unfortunately difficult to decipher due to the age.

Slim and finely worked iron blade with a pronounced ricasso and forge mark, transitioning into a diamond-shaped thrusting blade.
Good preserved condition
approximately 35 cm long

The hilt middle features a gold-colored ring that visually resembles gold leaf, and on this ring there are very fine engravings (see the detailed illustration). There are a cross and two lozenges in the center containing the three letters IHS.

2018 acquired from a private collection.
