Nel corso della storia l'Ametista ha sempre avuto una speciale virtù: quella di prevenire ubriachezza ed eccessiva indulgenza; tanto che anche gli antichi greci e romani usavano tempestare i loro calcici con ametista convinti che così facendo non potessero essere inebriati dalla bevanda.
Persino i Vescovi cattolici usano indossare una anello di Ametista per proteggersi dalla intossicazione mistica.
