Banlieues, a 1990 first edition photobook by Marc Riboud and Patrick Zachmann, in French, 116 pages, hardcover with dust jacket and case, published by Denoël, signed by both photographers.
Description from the seller
Exceptionally signed copy on the title page by Marc Riboud (1923-2016) and on the inner page by Patrick Zachmann (born 1955), unique and unobtainable elsewhere on the internet in a signed copy. 116 pages and 70 black-and-white photographs, including many full-page or double-page images, with introductory text in French by writer Patrick Sollers. Publisher’s black cloth binding with the title embossed in relief on the spine, tone-on-tone, illustrated dust jacket and editorial case. In excellent condition, practically as new.
This book, published in 1990, features photographs taken in France at Créteil, Sarcelles, Hérouville Saint-Clair, Vénissieux, Sucy-en-Brie, Voisins-le-Bretonneux, La Grande-Synthe, Villiers-le-Bel as well as in other peripheral neighborhoods that developed in the late 1960s and during the 1970s. Over time, with deindustrialization and rising unemployment, these neighborhoods, which we here see in a peaceful image, gradually transformed due to social misery, policing issues and incidents with the police, into scenes of urban violence that began to appear in the Lyon suburbs as early as 1990 and would become more widespread, particularly in 2005 and in 2023.
If Marc Riboud and Patrick Zachmann, the Magnum photographers, are well known, the other photographer Roland Laboye who also contributed to this book may be less known. Roland Laboye was born in 1944. Self-taught, he became a professional photographer in 1969 and belongs to the category of humanist photographers. He has often exhibited in France and abroad alongside the great names of humanist photography [Ronis, Boubat, Doisneau, Sander…]. In 1977 he was awarded the prestigious Niépce Prize.
Copy in excellent condition, practically like new as it is protected by its editorial case. A book from my personal collection kept with the greatest care. Shipped securely with reinforced packaging and guaranteed international tracking. For multiple purchases, grouped shipping is possible with a refund of any excess postage paid via Paypal.
