Sceptre Shango Hevioso - Fon - Benin

Beautiful and large Fon ceremonial scepters from Benin. They represent Shango / Hevioso, god of thunder and war. It is a powerful and formidable deity. Here it is depicted as a woman, raising aloft her double-edged axe. Her axe is simplified and stylized; it is a symbol of her power. A childlike figure sits at its center. A serpent adorns the front and a gecko on its back. The whole is beautiful and harmonious. A soft yet powerful presence emanates from this work. It is a special, captivating, and mysterious object that transports us into the dreamlike and magical world of Vodou culture. Lovely old patina. Cracks and wear visible in the photos; it is solid, sold as is. A beautiful old, authentic collectible piece with personality. Circa 1950.
