Vitra - Charles & Ray Eames - Chair - Elephant, Design Object - plastic

An item in excellent condition, a sculpture, stool, and child chair in one, from the Vitra brand and designed by Charles & Ray Eames in the United States of America. The item is green, and on top sits the official Vitra emblem, and underneath the decorative object is signed.

This Vitra elephant was originally designed in the early 1940s by Charles and Ray Eames. By the time Charles and Ray Eames spent many years developing and refining a technique for bending three-dimensional shapes from plywood and laminated wood. As they progressed, they designed a range of furniture and sculptures. Of all those original designs, the two-piece elephant proved the greatest technical challenge due to its strong multiple curves. The then-current techniques were not able to realize mass production of the elephant. The 14-year-old Lucia Eames, daughter of Charles, received a prototype that was later lent for an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1946. This prototype is still owned by the Eames family.

In the early 2000s the Eames Elephant was released in plastic, making it available to the originally intended audience: children. Thus the elephant can be used as an iconic design piece but also as a toy.
