Description from the seller
English box made of mahogany with geometric inlays – early 20th century
Elegant box crafted from solid mahogany, embellished with refined geometric inlays in precious wood species, datable to the early years of the 20th century. The piece features high-quality workmanship, with inlaid decoration that develops harmoniously on the lid and along the entire perimeter of the structure, characterized by linear geometric motifs and chevron-patterned frames made with thin fillets of woods in contrasting tones.
The top surface is adorned with a central geometric composition featuring a diamond and symmetrical triangulations, typical of late Victorian and Edwardian English production, a period in which this type of object was made for furnishing elegant homes and bourgeois drawing rooms. The choice of mahogany, a noble wood widely used in English craftsmanship between the 19th and early 20th century, gives the box a warm, deep tone, enhanced by the presence of polychrome inlays that create a refined decorative play.
Internally the box presents original wooden dividers, designed for organizing small personal items. This configuration was typical of the so‑called tea caddies or writing and drawing room boxes, used to store tea, cigars, small accessories or writing instruments. The interior structure is simple yet functional, made with light woods that contrast with the darker exterior.
The object measures about 31 cm in length, 21 cm in depth and 12 cm in height, dimensions ideal for placement on a desk, a bookcase, or a drawing room cabinet. The box preserves a beautiful patina of age that testifies to its authenticity and age.
General condition is good for its age. Note the absence of a key and some normal signs of time and use. These elements do not in any way compromise the stability or elegance of the piece and are part of the natural aging of an antique artifact. The interior is clean and well preserved.
A decorative object of great charm, ideal for collectors or for those who wish to insert an element of authentic antique into classic or eclectic environments.
