Description from the seller

Pair of Chinese porcelain brush pots (Bitong), traditionally used on a scholar’s desk for holding calligraphy brushes. Such objects were an important part of the classical Chinese scholar’s studio and are today appreciated as decorative pieces of Chinese art.

The larger brush pot is decorated with a colourful hand-painted scene showing flowers and a crane. In Chinese symbolism the crane represents longevity and good fortune. Above the decoration runs a band of Chinese calligraphy painted in black. The decoration is executed in enamel colours including red, green and turquoise on a white porcelain ground.

The smaller brush pot shows a delicate floral decoration with multicolour blossoms. Below the rim runs a band of Chinese characters and the rim is finished with a subtle gilt line which adds an elegant decorative accent.

Both pieces are made of glazed porcelain. The interiors are glazed and the bases show hand-painted characters. Small glaze dots and minor firing marks are visible which are typical for handmade porcelain of this type.

The objects are in good condition with normal age-related wear and small glaze imperfections consistent with age and use.

Large brush pot height approximately 13–14 cm.
Small brush pot height approximately 10–11 cm.

Origin China.
Material porcelain, hand painted.
Period 20th century.

The objects will be carefully packed.
