Description from the seller

Ring Australian Opal / Cabochon / new

Set in 925 Sterling Silver

Weight: 2.0 g / 10 ct

7.5 mm x 5.4 mm

New and unworn

Ring size:

U 57
UK P 1/2
US 8.0
Fr 17
Inner diameter: 18.1 mm

The opal is a mineral of the class “oxides and hydroxides.” As an amorphous solid, opal (like glass) has no crystal structure and usually appears as a massive vein filling or nodular form.

Opals are processed exclusively into gemstones for jewelry.

The word opal is borrowed from the Latin opalus or the Greek ὀπάλλιος opallios for ‘precious stone’ and probably traces back to upala in Sanskrit. According to Allan W. Eckert in his work The World of Opals, it has referred to various rocks, while early Magyars called opal mines opálbánya.

Opals were already regarded as particularly valuable gemstones in antiquity, sometimes even valued higher than diamonds. Pliny the Elder wrote: “[…] it has a fire of its own, a refined glow of carbuncle, it possesses the purplish spark of amethyst and the sea-green of emerald and an altogether incredible play of light.”
