On Sunday, February 9, 2020, storm Ciara swept over the Netherlands. The birch from which this bowl is made toppled over. Because birch wood does not always have a very interesting grain, I gave the natural process of decay time to affect the wood. This has allowed sleep in the wood (fungal spores and discoloration) to develop. Thus time has given this wood its fantastic grain.
Perhaps superfluous to mention, the fungi die as soon as the wood truly dries and become trapped in the wood and the finish with oil.
The bowl is finished with a finish based on plant oils and resins including linseed oil, pine oil, rosemary oil and wax. The oil is free from substances such as lead, cobalt, manganese or zirconium. The oil is initially very fluid and thus penetrates well into the wood fiber. After curing, the oil provides good protection against intrusion of moisture and dirt.
