Black opals occur, just as their differently colored counterparts, as spherical to knobby masses with no detectable crystal structure. Their beauty usually reveals itself only after the polishing of these. Characteristic of this form of opals is their opalescence, which manifests as an intense rainbow shimmer. Additionally, the host rock of the opal here is dark, grayish to black, which gave it this name.

Black opals form, like other opals, from silica-containing fluids that crystallize in sediments or volcanic rocks. Their characteristic sheen is due to water inclusions within the interior of this mineral.
