Description from the seller
Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid.
Very impressive antique Ottoman Empire Islamic silver ring. The ring has a large square bezel set with a carnelian intaglio depicting a stylised animal, standing to left.
The substantial silver ring is elaborately decorated with engraved vegetal and geometric ornamentation along the shoulders and sides. The shoulders are further embellished with appliqué elements forming stylised scrollwork and knot-like motifs. The bezel is framed by a beaded border.
The underside of the bezel is engraved with a hidden decorative scene enclosed within a rectangle divided by diagonal lines, forming four triangular compartments filled with small symbolic motifs. This engraving is concealed when the ring is worn and would only have been visible to the wearer.
-> Hidden engravings beneath the bezel are occasionally encountered on Ottoman rings and may have held symbolic or talismanic meaning known only to the owner.
Outside diameter: ± 24,6 mm
Inside diameter: ± 20,9 - 17,9 mm
Bezel height: ± 9,7 mm
Condition: good solid condition and wearable. Signs of wear consistent with age and use. The engraved carnelian remains clear, and the decorative silverwork elements retain their detail with a light patina.
Certificate of Authenticity: available upon request (pdf-format).
Catawiki disclaimer:
This object has been carefully examined for its material and surface characteristics.
Laboratory analysis (e.g. XRF) is not routinely undertaken in private collecting, and destructive testing is avoided as it causes permanent damage to archaeological material.
Before modern hallmarking, gold and silver alloys varied depending on local resources, recycling practices and economic conditions.
