Description from the seller
This is an icon of the “God the Sabaoth” (God the Father) with the Virgin and the Emmanuel in a cosmic form, accompanied by prophetic figures.
1. Upper part
The central figure in the upper circle is God the Father (Sabaoth), with a long white beard, in a blessing gesture.
To his sides appear prophets or patriarchs (likely from the Old Testament), holding books or scrolls.
2. Center of the icon (the most important area)
A cosmological composition is visible:
A blue circle with stars → it symbolizes the sky / the universe.
Inside there is the Virgin Mary (Orans type).
On her chest, a medallion with Christ Emmanuel (the child).
Around there are eye-shaped forms (very typical): they represent the seraphim / cherubim, celestial beings who “see all.”
3. The four or five saints in circles
Around there are figures with books, probably:
Evangelists or
Greater Prophets
The style more strongly suggests prophets due to the traditional Russian aesthetics.
Style and origin
Icon in Russian style, probably 18th–19th centuries.
Technique: tempera on panel.
Dark reddish background typical of late icons.
Theological meaning
This type of icon represents:
The Trinity in a symbolic form (the Father above, Christ in the center).
The Incarnation (Christ within Mary).
The universe as divine creation, with heavenly hierarchies.
Incription at the top
The inscription in ecclesiastical Slavonic seems to refer to:
“Всевидящее Око Божие” → “The All-Seeing Eye of God”
This fits perfectly with the eyes around the central circle.
Name of the icon
“The All-Seeing Eye of God” (Всевидящее Око Божие)
