Oromo coffee table (attributed), Ethiopia (No reserve price)

Oromo coffee table (attributed), Ethiopia HIGHLIGHTS • Fine Oromo coffee table • Elegant pedestal form • Rich old patina of use • Geometric incised decoration • Strong sculptural presence • Attributed to the Oromo • No stand DETAILS Origin: Oromo people (attribution), Ethiopia Material: Wood Dimensions: Height: 24 cm; Diameter: 30 cm Period: 20th century Stand: None DESCRIPTION INTRODUCTION A finely carved Oromo coffee table, distinguished by its elegant pedestal structure, restrained geometric ornament and deep old patina. Functional in origin, the piece also stands out as a highly satisfying sculptural object. FORM AND CARVING The table is composed of a broad circular top raised on a central faceted pedestal set on a wide circular base. The proportions are particularly successful, giving the piece both stability and visual lightness. The pedestal and base are enriched with incised geometric motifs, while the rim of the top is subtly articulated with alternating carved segments. SURFACE AND PRESENCE The wood has developed a rich, dark patina from age and long use, especially attractive across the top and along the vertical shaft. The worn surface softens the carving and reinforces the sense of authenticity and domestic life, while minor losses to the top and base remain consistent with age and use. CONDITION Good overall condition. Beautiful old patina of use. Visible wear, scratches and surface marks consistent with age and handling. Small loss to the top. Small loss to the base. No stand.
