This finely executed hand-painted icon, dating to the second half of the 19th century, portrays Saint John with wings—symbolizing his role as a divine messenger—holding a scroll and often accompanied by traditional spiritual elements associated with his life of asceticism in the wilderness.
The icon is housed in an ornate repoussé and chased silver-plated oklad (riza), richly decorated with intricate floral and geometric motifs. The oklad both protects the painted surface and enhances the sacred presence of the piece, leaving key elements such as the face and hands exposed.
