By then, the small Vespa was no longer just a youthful vehicle: it was part of the Italian and European cultural landscape, established as a symbol of everyday freedom and timeless design.

The 50 Special of 1978 kept the essence that made it famous — steel monocoque body, compact dimensions and the characteristic square headlight — but incorporated small technical evolutions and finishes typical of the era. Its aesthetics blended functional simplicity with an unmistakable character: clean lines, protective shield and that silhouette that seemed to float lightly among urban traffic.

Under the seat beat the classic two-stroke, air-cooled, 49 cc single-cylinder engine, paired with a manual transmission on the left grip. In these final versions, many units came with a four-speed gearbox, offering a more elastic and city-friendly response.
